Although this list may seem to owe much to Bollywood’s latest celebrity fad diet, there’s a good reason to include many of these uncommon foods into your diet.
These knobbly-looking things, also known as ‘earth almonds’, are high in healthy fats and protein. Scientifically-speaking, these are actually tubers rather than nuts but like many nuts, these are calorie-dense so eat in moderation. When dried and roasted, the nuts can be flavored with ingredients like chili and salt for an easy snack.
This gluten-free and nutritionally dense baking ingredient is naturally light in texture, so ideal for baking. It may help guard against colon cancer so consider including it in your food trends for 2019 – especially if you are avoiding gluten.
KelpHigh in iodine, which can help improve thyroid function and control metabolism, this sea vegetable is surprisingly delicious in soups and salads. In powdered form, it’s very easy to incorporate into a smoothie – here’s one of our favorite recipes:
Blueberry kelp smoothie1/2 ripe banana A small punnet of blueberries (about 150 g) 2 tablespoons flax seed oil 1 teaspoon almond butter 300 ml almond milk 1 tablespoon powdered kelp 1 tablespoon whey powder or tofu (optional) Whiz these ingredients in a blender.
Mangosteen smoothieMangosteen is often available in juice format, making it easy to blend into a smoothie. It’s a tropical fruit from Southeast Asia known to be full of antioxidants, some of which have anti-aging properties. Mangosteen is also reputed to help support the immune system and benefit the joints. Here’s a tangy recipe for a zingy mangosteen smoothie using the juiced fruit. A small dash of mangosteen juice – about 3 tablespoons or to taste 2 English cucumbers cut into chunks 100 g fresh pineapple chunks 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (or to suit your taste) Whiz the ingredients in your blender and add water until it reaches a drinkable thickness.
